How to Choose the Right Chimney Cowl

Below we list the most common chimney draughting problems and the specific chimney cowls we sell to resolve them. Please read each of the chimney cowls descriptions on their individual product page for more in-depth information. There are also product technical PDFs available at the bottom of each product page that you can download.

Downdraught:

If the problem (smoke or fumes coming out the fireplace or stove) occurs only in windy conditions then this is a downdraught. The anti downdraught chimney cowls to use are:  A) An  Anti Downdraft Chimney Cowl if your problem is not severe, B) A Spinner Chimney Cowl if the your problem is severe and your chimney is over 6m in length and C) H Chimney Cowl if your problem is severe but your chimney is shorter than 6m.

Lack of Draught:

If the problem (smoke or fumes coming out the fireplace or stove) occurs when there is little or no wind, then this is not a downdraught.  This is a lack of draught.  Anti downdraught chimney cowls are not effective at resolving  a lack of draught, therefore do not purchase one,  there is only  type of chimney cowl to solve a lack of draught and that is a Chimney Fan

Too Much Draught / Burning Excess Fuel / Excessive Noise / Up-Down Problem:

Chimney Control can be used to resolve all of these problems, however, it can only be fitted to an solid fuel open fireplace. The Chimney Control can also be used to prevent an up/down problem. An up/down problem is when smoke rises up and out of one chimney and is sucked back down an adjoining chimney pot. If you have a stove or insert installed in your home , a Modified Static 50% can be fitted. It will help prevent a chimney creating too much draught or burning too much fuel only. It will not stop noise or an up-down problem described earlier.

Our Cap Off Chimney Capper will help you block you chimney permanently. If you ever want to use it again, just remove the capper from the top of your chimney pot.

Nesting Birds / Rain Penetration:

An Chimney Bird Guard will stop bird nesting in your chimney and stop rain-water getting in. If your problem is severe driving rain, a Static Chimney Cowl is the solution.
